When you walk into a finished home, it’s easy to focus on what you can see. The flooring, cabinets, countertops and beautiful finishes. But high performance homes are built around something you can’t see: what’s happening behind the drywall.

But at Sonbuilt, we believe some of the most important parts of a home are the things you can’t see.

Behind the drywall is where much of a home’s comfort, efficiency, durability and indoor air quality is determined.

That starts with the building envelope. Proper insulation and careful air sealing help prevent unwanted heat loss and drafts while keeping interior temperatures more consistent. In a high-performance home, we pay close attention to the continuity of the insulation and air barrier because even small gaps or penetrations can affect how a building performs.

The mechanical systems matter too. A properly designed HRV, for example, provides fresh outdoor air while recovering heat from the outgoing air. This helps maintain good indoor air quality without simply exhausting the heat you’ve already paid to create.

Then there is moisture management. Proper detailing around windows, doors, roofs and exterior walls helps keep water where it belongs:   outside the building assembly. The goal isn’t just to build a home that looks great on the day you move in. It’s to build one that continues to perform years down the road.

This is also why we believe in testing and verifying our work. Building science isn’t just about choosing better materials; it’s about making sure the entire system works together.

The finished drywall may hide these details, but they continue working every day.
